Is it always about winning??

The 2010 Winter Olympics are over, and as a Canadian, I am extremely proud. Not only with our fantastic athletes, but also with the Patriotism that was displayed in every city across Canada. A survey shows that over 90% of Canadians were either extremely satisfied or satisfied with the performance.

I was glued to the Television every night. I discovered some sports that I didn’t know existed. Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross have become two of my favourite venues. Wow, talk about exciting!

My nephew, Tom Chenoweth, did a fantastic job producing the series “Over the Bolts” before the Olympics, and producing the Snowboarding coverage for NBC during the Olympics. This gave me an added incentive to closely follow the Snowboarding events, but in reality they were so exciting I couldn’t stop watching them.

What can I say about that final Hockey Game!! It was the most thrilling hockey game I have ever seen, and I watched the Canada/Russia game in 1972. Watching the fans celebrate after the game was the icing on the cake. Downtown Waterloo, where I live, was crazy with fans waving flags and singing Oh Canada!

I have heard many people talk about their “favourite Olympic moment” and there were many of those. From the Opening to the Closing Ceremonies, there were so many stories of heroism. I loved the way that NBC covered the Olympics. (hit here for a touching Thank you letter from NBC to Canada.) I have always felt very fortunate to have the United States as our neighbours and the coverage we received was awesome. I made note of the comments after this piece from many Americans.

But, what was my “FAVOURITE” Olympic moment! Early on in the games there was a very strong performance from Kristi Richards. Kristi was a member of the Canadian freestyle team. Kristi Richards competed in the final of the moguls after finishing the qualifying run in 4th place. Richards landed her first jump and on her way to the second jump she lost control, lost a ski, and fell. I was watching Kristi as she stood for a while and collected her thoughts. Her skis had come off and she stood where she was and put them on again. To the cheers of the Canadians waiting at the bottom she once again sped on her way to the second jump. There she landed a back full and completed her run to a screaming throng of Canadian fans at the bottom. However, due to her fall she finished in 20th place and last in the final.

I don’t look at that run as a Last place finish! I regard Kristi as a winner all the way! The courage and composure to gather her thoughts; the determination to continue to the end no matter what..that to me was a winner! No matter what we do in life or business, we need to set goals. It is as important to know that when life, for whatever reason, throws us a curve, we get up and keep going. Congratulations Kristi Richards, my Olympic Hero!

“For when the One Great Scorer comes
To write against your name,
He marks – not that you won or lost –
But how you played the Game.”
(from the poem “Alumnus Football”)

  1. Great Post Jeannie!

It was awesome to see how “all” the athletes did over the last 2 weeks. Very inspirational.

Hard to believe how much heart some of them have under tremendous pressure and yet they perform very well.

It’s going to be hard to wait another 4 years to see it again.
