Goal Setting – Are you passionate about your goals?

The ability to concentrate and to use your time well is everything if you want to succeed in business–or almost anywhere else for that matter. –Lee Iacocca, Author

The quote from Lee Iacocca, sums it up in one neat sentence. There are two steps to success, one is to know what you want (otherwise known as a goal) and the other is to be able to concentrate and focus on it enough to be able to achieve it.

There is nothing wrong with making mistakes. Every successful business person makes many mistakes but, they also learn how to overcome them. If you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t doing anything! You have to stretch yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Just think about how many times you fell down when you learned how to skate, but you get back up and try again. Remember how fantastic you felt when you finally glided along the ice.

To experience success you have to have clearly defined goals and then take the necessary steps to accomplish them. If you fall on the way, congratulate yourself for making the attempt; examine your mistakes and continue the climb again.

Life tends to throw us obstacles, we might have to rest before we travel on or take another route but we must still focus on the end result. Don’t let the difficult climb stop you from achieving or setting higher goals. Avoid what I term as Fortune Telling. Do you find yourself predicting future negative outcomes, sometimes, even before you begin an undertaking, for example, “They won’t want to deal with me.” or, “Things are alright now, but something will soon happen to mess things up.” And, when something does go wrong (as things often do) you acclaim, “I knew it.” Thus, your belief in your fortune telling ability becomes so strong that next time you don’t even bother to try.

Enjoy the journey, and you will eventually reach the top!

If you are passionate about your goal and it is strong enough you will make it happen. Have a strong mental attitude and remain positive. Negative thoughts are self-defeating. Believe in yourself and be convinced that you can live a richer, fuller live. Work hard and be responsible for your own success.

Try to be creative and think outside of your normal way of doing, acting, and being. What are your self-defeating habits and attitdues? Focus on getting rid of them.

Make a list of what you are passionate about What do you love to do.

Make goals that are possible to accomplish and plan them around positive actions. Don’t ever stop to think that your goal is unachievable – or it will be! Stay positive. Get a mentor to cheer you on and help you to celebrate your accomplishments.

Every success story starts with a dream. What are your dreams? Write them down and determine what you have to do to achieve them and in what time frame. When is the best time for you to dream and plan your goals? I know that mine is at the gym, working out on a treadmill or going for a walk or run. Decide on when and where is the best time for you to work on your goals. It isn’t when you are at work with a million distractions.

Dream everything in the present tense: “I am successful.” “I will reach my goal.” You will be able to visualize the outcome and you will act as if your dream has already been acheived. Don’t let your mind work on what has happened or what will be. Focus on the present and that it has already occured.

Your goals must be valuable to you or you will be unable to fulfill them. What values do you place on your life, career, your family? What are you passionate about?

Make sure that you review your goals on a regular basis. If you set your goals at the beginning of the year, review your progress at regular intervals. Think of it as a journey with a well laid out road map. You would never go on a long trip without checking your map to see where you are. Are you where you should be? Successful people know where they are at all times. It is all about focus and concentration to climb to the top.

Make sure that you reward yourself. Celebrate your achievements!
