Everytime I have a plan of what I am going to post something happens that gives me inspiration and I change my mind.
Coach John Wooden passed away at the age of 99 and left a legacy. His legacy in statistics as a Basketball coach are only part of why he will be remembered. Wooden led by example, following his “Pyramid of Success” as faithfully as he preached it.
I found Ten of the Best quotes by John Wooden and as I looked at them I wondered how well I was applying them and how I could improve. Not only in my business life but also for personal growth.
So here goes:
1) “The worst thing about new books is that they keep us from reading the old ones.”
I had to think about that for a minute. Are we always so busy in learning what is new we forget the lessons of the past? I am an avid reader, struggling to find time to read the “latest” self-development book or novel. After reading this quote, I looked at my bookshelf and decided that I need to read one of the classics that I haven’t read for many years. My choice might be a surprise to many, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. This book brings back many childhood memories. I have also promised to read it to two very special five year olds. For self-development, I am going to go back to one of my first, Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. What books do you need to revisit?
2) If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.
Well, to me this is an easy fix. I honestly have to say that I will try pretty well anything, at least once. I am rarely sorry for stretching myself but I find too many people get into their comfort zone and don’t try something new, fearful of failing. Learn by your mistakes. What new thing are you going to try?
3) Advertsity is the state in which man mostly easily becomes acquainted with himself, being especially free of admirers then.
Again, when I reflect on my life, the most difficult times have really shaped who I am and why I act how I do. I am a much stronger and better person because of the adversities I have experienced, not the easy times. What can you learn by looking at your adversities and making them into a positive growth experience?
4) Never mistake activity for achievement.
I call this “busy” work. We show up for work but are we productive when we are there. We need to strive for a goal and use our activity to achieve it. What do you want to achieve?
5) Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.
I call this “Do onto Others”. It is a great practice to follow in business and personal life. What changes do you need to make in the way you live your life?
I want to reflect on these five quotes and put into action some of the areas that need improvement. Next blog I will post the next five Words of Wisdom quotes!
