Being a Realtor is a very challenging and exciting profession. I don’t always feel that the public, and definitely the media, fully understand what the Professional Realtor brings to the table when working with a Seller or Buyer.
As in any profession there are the great Realtors, the good Realtors and the ones that, well let’s say, it would be better for all of us if they chose another profession.During the past few months, much has been written by both Realtors and the Media about the CREA – Competition Bureau Agreement. I have read with interest both sides of the argument. I believe fully in the value of using a Realtor but I was having difficulty putting it into words.
Last week, I picked up a copy of the November REM and as I was going through it I noticed an Obituary for David Rossi. I had heard of David but had never had the pleasure of meeting him in person. David was known as an expert on Real Estate ethics, and noted in a 2007 interview with REM’S Kathy Bevan that chairing the Code of Ethics Committee at RECO was “one of my most cherished roles, to actually develop with a group of very knowledgeable people, a Code of Ethics that lives on. It demonstrated that we wanted to be professionals, and that we were willing to do what it took in terms of a Code of Ethics and education.”During his 35 years in real estate David came up with a list of 10 ideals.
As I read the list it occured to me that those 10 ideals pretty well summed up the value of a Realtor.
Here is David’s list:
Relationships
Honesty
Dedication
Integrity
Follow-through
Knowing the territory and doing your homework
Paying attention to details
Troubleshooting problems before they occur
Striving for perfection – And most importantly…putting client’s interests ahead of your own.
David also stated that another philosophy of his “is that there are two bottom lines in business: one is to make a lot of money; two is to enjoy the journey.
I’ve always concentrated on enjoying the journey, because when you do, the money comes. And if you focus on making money, you may not enjoy the
journey. That’s what newer people don’t understand yet. There’s a lot of presentations, get a listing, make a sale – but they have to enjoy what they’re doing’.
My personal regret is that I didn’t have the opportunity to meet you in person David Rossi. Rest in Peace.
